Shepu also known as Dill is a very nutritious herb with immense health benefits. Apart from Indian cuisine, Dill is also used in Mediterranean dishes. The recipe below is a popular maharashtrian recipe - quick and healthy. I love this bhaji with bhakari( bajri or jowari bread)...Back at home in India, Mom always include green leafy vegetable everyday in the meals. I wish I can do it here ... :(
I have memories with Shepu and Methi (fenugreek) bhaji as mom used to give them in our tiffin box to school :) Sometimes, me and hubby dear just crave for this bhaji and bhakri...
Shepuchi Bhaji |
- 1 bunch of Dill (Shepu) Leaves
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 3-4 green chillies, finely chopped
- 1-2 garlic, grated
- pinch of Salt
- pinch of Asafoetida
- 1 tbsp Oil
- Wash and soak the moong dal. I prefer to soak it for 3-4 hours so that the bhaji gets cooked quickly.
- Clean the shepu leaves. Wash thoroughly under running water. After straining the water chop the leaves and keep aside.
- Heat oil in a pan. Add pinch of asafoetida followed by grated garlic.
- Add the finely chopped green chillies. Saute it till the garlic is golden brown.
- Now add the chopped shepu, moong dal and turmeric powder. Mix well.
- Add a cup of water and cook the shepu and dal for 8-10 minutes at low flame till the water evaporates. By this time the moong dal should be soft and cooked completely.
- Serve with bread.
