Semiya Upma

Semiya Upma is a quick breakfast recipe...It is cooked similar to upma and taste delicious.
Semiya Upma
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups semiya (vermicelli) ( I use this: Bambino)
  • ½ cup onion, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup carrot, finely chopped and boiled
  • 1/4 cup peas, boiled
  • 2-3 green chillies, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup shredded coconut
  • 1-2 whole red chillies
  • 4-5 curry leaves
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad daal
  • 1/8 teaspoon asafetida
  • Lemon juice
  • Cilantro (for garnish)
  • 1 Tbsp Oil
  • pinch of Salt
Method:
  • Roast the semiya over medium heat until they turn golden brown. Transfer them to a plate and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a frying pan and add mustard seeds, urad dal, red chillies and asafetida.
  • When the urad dal turns golden brown add onion, green chillies and curry leaves.
  • Fry onions till golden brown. Add carrots and peas and saute it for 2-3 min. (You can also add other veggies like beans,corn, broccoli...)
  • Add 3 cups of water to this and let it come to boil.
  • Add salt and lemon juice and the roasted semiya. Stir this mixture.
  • Cover the frying pan with a lid and let this mixture cook on low flame for 4-5 min.
  • Stir occasionally as required.
  • Garnish with cilantro and shredded coconut.
  • Semiya upma is ready to serve.
